Alfa 164 Technical Service Bulletin 04.95.01

Information: Sub-Zero Breather Kit

Models: All 164 Models

Date: 3/08/95

It has been determined that the oil/vapor separator may freeze on 164 models that experience extreme SUB-ZERO temperatures for a extended period of time. This condition will cause the crankcase to pressurize, resulting in hard starting or oil blowing out of the sump.

For vehicles subjected to extended SUB-ZERO temperatures, a "Sub-Zero Breather Kit" is available. The kit consists of a spacer plate that mounts between throttle body and air intake plenum. It is ported and fitted with a Positive Crankcase Valve (P.C.V.) that tee's into the breather hose going from the oil separator to the large black rubber intake hose, upstream of the throttle body.

Note:All pieces must be ordered individually to make up a complete kit.
Part description Quantity Part #
P.C.V. 1 60778021
Plate 1 60778022
Gasket 2 96411870
M7xl x60 2 60897537
M7xl x50 2 60808042
Plastic Tee 1 60503094
Pre-molded Hose 1 60778020
Clamps 4 60801834

Installation is as follows:

Install P.C.V. (#1) into plate (#2). fig.1

Using 2 Gaskets (#3) bolt the Plate (#2) between throttle body and the air intake plenum. Substitute original throttle body bolts with - 2 M7xlx5O (#5) & 2 M7xlx6O (#4). fig.1 plenum gaskets

Cut the black rubber hose coming from the oil separator to the large black intake hose approximately 245mm (9.5 inches) measuring from the oil separator. From that point measure 3Omm (1 inch) more and cut again leaving a 3Omm gap in the hose. fig.2 rubber hose

Install plastic tee (#6) and hose (#7) to P.C.V. & plastic tee. Use hose clamps (#8) on all 4 connections. fig.3 hose connections

NOTE:The installation of this kit is only approved for the 164 vehicles that are located in extremely cold areas!
