Airbag System Maintenance: Every Two Years Minimum

The following procedures will test the ability of the Airbag system to illuminate the warning light, store a fault code, and to clear the fault code when prompted by the technician.

I. CHECK WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION

  1. Turn ignition key to ON.
  2. Verify that the AIRBAG warning light illuminates steadily for approximately 6 seconds, then goes out.
  3. Turn ignition key to OFF.
  4. Verify that the AIRBAG warning light stays off.
  5. If the AIRBAG warning light does no operate properly, refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual and T.S.B. 45.93.03 for procedures to diagnose code 41 and/or 42, then repeat this test. If the warning light operates properly, proceed with "CHECK CODE CAPTURE" procedure below.

II. CHECK CODE CAPTURE

  1. Unplug the left front impact sensor.
  2. Turn ignition key to ON.
  3. Verify that the AIRBAG warning light illuminates steadily for approximately 6 seconds, goes out for a few seconds, then begins to flash rapidly.
  4. Verify that the AIRBAG warning light flashes on and off for approximately 5 minutes, then illuminates steadily.
  5. Turn ignition key to OFF.
  6. Verify that the AIRBAG warning light goes out.
  7. Re-connect left front impact sensor.
  8. Install AIRBAG tester (special tool P/N 608-97414) to AIRBAG test connector, and move toggle switch to the ON position.
  9. Turn ignition key to ON.
  10. Observe AIRBAG warning light, and verify that the warning light remains off for approximately 5 seconds, then displays code sequence 12-12-12, 15-15-15, 16-16-16, 12-12-12.
  11. Turn ignition key to OFF.
  12. Verify that the AIRBAG warning light goes out.
  13. If the AIRBAG warning light does not operate properly, refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual and T.S.B. 45.93.03 for procedures to diagnose codes 15 and/or 16, then repeat this test. If the warning light operates properly, proceed with "CHECK CODE CLEARING" procedure below.

III. CHECK CODE CLEARING

  1. Switch the AIRBAG tester to the ON position.
  2. Turn ignition key to ON.
  3. Observe AIRBAG warning light, and verify that the light remains off for approximately 5 seconds, then, while the display flashes the code 12 sequence; Immediately move toggle switch on AIRBAG tester to OFF position - wait 3 seconds,
    THEN

    Immediately move toggle switch on AIRBAG tester to ON position - wait 3 seconds,
    THEN

    Immediately move toggle switch on AIRBAG tester to OFF position and turn ignition key to OFF.
  4. Remove AIRBAG tester.
  5. Turn ignition key to ON.
  6. Observe AIRBAG warning light, and verify that the AIRBAG warning light illuminates steadily for approximately 6 seconds, then goes out and stays off.
  7. Turn ignition key to OFF.

If the AIRBAG warning light does not operate properly, repeat procedures II and III. If the AIRBAG warning li ;ht still does not operate properly, refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual and T.S.B. 45.93.03 for further assistance to diagnose codes 15, 16, 31-34, and 51.

If the warning light operates properly, note on the RO your satisfactory results of the Airbag System to illuminate the warning light, store a fault code, and to clear the fault code when prompted by the technician.
