During stepper motor R&R, the installation of a metal securing ring onto the distribution drum shaft (the female receptacle for the stepper motor) is necessary. This will prevent possible future breakage of the drum shaft and repair any cracked or broken drums.

First, remove The Stepper Motors by following the information given in T.S.B 8O.93.O2 and by viewing the video p/n 60697496.

After removing of the stepper motors, remove the three tabbed floating plastic place, located under the stepper motor metal mounting brackets by rotating it clockwise. With the help of a flashlight. inspect carefully for a crack or any breakage where the distribution stepper motor T- type drive inserts into the drum receptacle. If found only cracked, but intact, slide metal securing ring over the receptacle while aligning the notches with the distribution drum flap edge. The metal securing ring must slide completely on, so as not to hang out beyond the receptacle end.

If the distribution drum female receptacle is found broken. It can be repaired without dash removal. Repair is done easily by carufuily retrieving the broken piece with needlenose pliers. Apply a dot of glue to the broken area. Position the piece to fit properly back in its place of origin. Then proceed with the installation of the metal ring as explained above.

If receptacle is broken and the piece missing, it is possible to retrieve it, Call the Alfa Romeo Technical Hot Line for information on different ways to access the broken piece without dash removal.
