First of all, my thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who has a friend or family member missing in NYC or DC.

Can anyone advise me on how difficult it is to replace the exhaust flex pipes that go between the headers and catalytic converter? Mine have separated, and I've ordered the replacement part from Stebro (almost US$340 with shipping -- yikes!). It clearly looks like a bolt-on/bolt-off installation, yet it also looks like there could be some complications due to seized bolts due to extreme heat, etc. If I can do it myself, I'll save some significant labor $$$.

Thanks,

Adam R.

This may be a bit of help. I had mine replaced about 6 mos ago at a cost of about $120 using universal flex tubing. The only problem I had was that the original tubes that were used were too short & internally gave way after a few weeks. The muffler shop replaced them @ no charge w/ some that were about 10" or 12" long - they've been fine ever sence.

Thanks to all on the flex pipe advice. I certainly wish I knew about that cheaper solution; however, the part has already been received, and I figure since I have it, I might as well keep the car as close to factory as possible.
Also, I believe I'll take the car to an exhaust shop rather than attempting the repair myself.

Thanks!

Adam, Did you receive the gaskets with your Stebro flex pipes? I purchased the same from Dan at Stebro as he promosed me all neccessary parts but never came through with the gaskets after repeated promises. He is becoming famous for lack of concern after the sale!

Adam, I recently fitted 2 flex pipes on my car. They are very expensive in uk about 400 pounds. You will definetly need heat to get the cat end bolts loose and make sure you get new gaskets and a new set of nuts bolts wont go amiss.
Piece of cake job about 50 minutes.

Adam, You're not going to like this...or maybe you will. Call Exhaust Productions Inc at 219-942-0069. They sell just the flex portion of your front pipes. If you buy two 10" x 1 3/4" units WITHOUT NIPPLES, the part number on my invoice is FO10175, you can cut the old ones out and have these welded in. They are almost exactly the same size, and will weld in perfectly. Now the part you won't like.......the cost, $35.06 each. These flex pipes are stainless, and the existing pipes should be stainless if they are originals. Test for this with a magnet. Enjoy! Dennis.

JC WHitney has those pipes at about $25/each.
Is it 1 3/4 " or 2" ? It looks like 2" pipes. I'm using a pair of 2" flexpipes on my Milano. The 164L/S may have smaller downpipes like 1 3/4" but the LS has BIG down pipes, 2" per side.

Zamani, I bought the Flex pipes from Whitney too, 2" X 10" long. Because they are set up with clamp on nipples, they are too large in OD to fit together to replace the factory ones. I sent 'em back and ordered the 1 3/4" X 10" pipes WITHOUT NIPPLES, and they are the perfect OD size to replace the factory units. The ID is the same also, so you just cut out the old, and weld in the new. I took my pipes off the car to do it, so needed gaskets as well as studs and nuts for the bottom of the manifolds, which were too rusty to save. Not a big job, but remember to take the old pipes out with the Cat, so you can use it to hold everything in proper place for welding. It may well be as good to change the flex pipes without taking the pipes off, then location will be quite simple. Good luck. Dennis

I think mine is leaking badly as well. Those universial ones, are we talking about 94-95 LS/Q models or earlier 91-93 L/S models?

thanks.

Hi
I needed the same job done, and I brought the pipe with me to my local Midas shop. It was a one hour labor charge of $50, which I thought was well worth it. They were not insulted that I brought the part since they could not get one anyway.

There is some confusion here as to which flex pipe from EPI (www. Epiflex.com)
should go on what model. The 164 Base and L /S 12V cars need the 10" x 1 3/4"
flex pipe which is available from JC Whitney for $25 (with nipples) and EPI
for $35 (without). The 24V cars (LS and Quad) require the larger size i.e. 10" x
2" pipes without nipples which are only available from EPI for $45. Again
they can be bought from Whitney for $25 and you can save money by cutting the
nipples off both ends yourself with a hacksaw. The nipples, by the way are
wider extensions which allow the flex pipe to slide over the existing exhaust
pipe and be secured in place with clamps. Unfortunately there is not enough
room to fit them in the 164 exhaust so they must be removed and the flex pipe
welded in place. I am told that these flex pipes do induce a whistle into the
system and that EPI can make them with additional material on the inside
which will prevent this whistle. Anyone found this to be
