The drivers outside mirror on my 93 S
has become loose on its pivot point so
that it vibrates while driving.

The aluminium alloy casting seems to be
degrading as well,oxidation evident under
the flaking paint

Is this a fixable item or should I stop
eating and save up for the replacement
new part?

Thanks,Colin

The mirrors on Alfas (esp 164s) are generally very poor and yours might also be broken at the casting - I tried loads of things but failed to fix em.

Cheers

Be aware that in NA the right hand outside mirror is concave. On some cars sold here, not necessarily Alfa, there's a sign on it "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" This is a clear indication of the mentality of the average NA driver. If you buy a NA spec right hand mirror you would get a broader view of traffic, but it would be different from what you're used to.

In my experience, objects appear to be very small in the mirror, about 2 inches by 4 inches commonly, so they appear to be very far away if the brain (using that term loosely) assumes that the image in the mirror is an accurate representation of the actual vehicle reflected. Normally, the human brain adjusts its impression of the reflection and treats it symbolically, automatically calculating the actual size and position of the reflected object. I doubt that the human brain is mislead by slight inaccuracies caused by concave reflections but I suppose you never know. Chimpanzees are of course unable to understand reflections. One despairs sometimes!

I know from experience that the S(QV) mirrors are physically different from all other 164s.
Not only are they not usually painted they are shaped differently.
After receiving a non S mirror and having to send it back. I looked up the part number myself and ordered it that way. Note that there are Three part numbers for each side of the S mirror.
By Colour.
It took about 4 months for Ferrari of Seattle to get it from Italy, but it finally came, and it was the correct shape, and correct colour!
The cost was about $300 + shipping.
Note that the drivers side has some extra electronics (temp sensor) and may cost more.

Ciao, -Jeff

Thanks Jeff,I think I've found a QV one
here in the land of the long white
cloud......its black( as needed) and
priced at $200 new!

Good deal I thought.

A good woman that Alfa godmother,but I
do hope she's up to speed with chassis
numbers and such and the right part
arrives in a couple of days.
