I recently found an add for an alfa 164 in the paper. The car is from 1993. The owner says it is a special series of the 164 called "quattrofilo." It has a 3.0 liter engine which originally had 250 hp; however, he super charged it to 280 hp. He says the car has leather sport Ricarro seats and something extra original additions to the body. The wheel rims are 16 inch. The car has 150,000 km. I haven't seen the car yet because it is quite a haul out there. If I were to purchase it would leave me without the cloths on my back. But then again who wants clothes when you can sit on leather seats? I have never heard of this car and I am afraid that I will be getting into deep mud if I were to purchase it; having such problems as unavailibity of parts, expensive to maintain, and perhaps the car is quite tempermental like most high tuned sports cars are. I am not knowledgeable of cars like you guys are so I can't fix most problems. Should I stay away? Thanks!!

What he meant was "Quadrifoglio" also known as Quadrifoglio Verde, QV or cloverleaf. All same or similar name for Sport version of 164. Extras attached to the body are the aero kit as shown on the picture on the top of this webpage. They are composed of side skirts and front and rear air dams. Also 16" wheels should look same on the picture. Engine is rated at 230hp not 250hp. Alfa never produced 250hp version of 3.0L V6 in production car. (3.2L V6 on new 156GTA is making 250hp though) Standard seats are the sport version of regular seats and on top of that there was rare Recaro seat options. Difference is that recaro has the memory function and more movements. (cushion shape is also different). Reliability is above average among typical Italian reliability. Parts are not cheap and used are rare since not a huge numbers are sold. It depends on where you leave though. But bottom line is, 164 isn't cheap car to maintain.

If it's going to leave you without the clothes on your back just to purchase it, you're not mechanically inclined enough to be able to do your own repairs, and it's a non-standard model to boot, my advice would be to steer well clear because of the obvious risk factor involved and the expensive nature of 164 repairs. Specially if the owner is calling his Quadrifoglio a 'Quattrofilo' - sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about. Also there never was a standard 164 with 250hp - even the 164QV and Q4 developed only 230hp - so I'd be a bit dubious about the 280hp claim if he can't quote the original standard output correctly.

The misspelling could be due to the person at the newspaper taking down the information rather than the seller.

Walk away from this car. There are a lot of good 164's out there, this does not sound like a good one. Buying a dubious car will cause you to spend a lot of money fixing big problems.

When I can stand the pain, I will speak of buying a 164 from a guy on the street in the rain. Only 2.5 years to go before its paid off though.

Agreed. If buying does not leave you with cash to spare you MIGHT be entering a world of pain. You also might have absolutely no problems and all and enjoy driving a class machine with the only money required being scheduled maintenance costs which you can get done at an independent garage.

I purchased my 96 Cloverleaf knowing it was going to need a cambelt service and probably a new air con pump...the heart does rule the head but I do not regret it one bit.

Let us know if you get it :)
