I have recently acquired an 1992 ex Hong Kong 168Q (with Recaro option) now registered in Australia. Does anyone know of an easy way to confirm if the current engine number (ARO6412017901) is that of the original unit matching the VIN number (ZAR16400006255413) on the chassis? Also interested in the original vehicle specifications if someone can point me in the appropriate direction.

Just typed your chassis number into my parts CD and it came up with the following;
Chassis number 06255413
Eng. mark 64301
Eng.number 0004709
Eng. type M5 3.0V6 QV
Version V3 QV
MVS 164.953.0
MVS Description 3.0 Q.V.(USA'83)MAQ '90
Production Date 01 1992
Drive dx
Don't know if any of this means much to you but I thought you might be interested.I personally haven't got a clue what a lot of this means even when I type in my own cars details.

Craig, thanks for the info, some of it is very helpful. Like you not all of it is clear to me, although it does appear to confirm the original QV nature of the car. I still can't figure out if the engine number that popped up on your CD search bears any relation to the number stamped on the motor itself - since they don't have the same number of digits for example.

Is it possible to enter the engine number I retrieved from the car and to see what the parts CD has to say about that?

Thanks again.

Barry H

Unfortunately the CD doesn't seem able to search for anything from the engine number. I tried it with both your details and my own cars which are definitely all correct on the CD.
What I get when I type in my chassis number is 0000985 as the engine number, this is exactly as it reads on my log book and also matches the final digits (plus one zero)of the number stamped upon the engine, though the vin plate reads 66302 which seems to correspond to the first part of what is actually stamped upon the engine, which is AR66302+000985+
Hope this helps
