hi all,
i know that a 24valve motor will fit in older cars no problem but can i use the newer tranny as well? any info concerning this mod is appreciated. i do suspect this will be a bolt on but if i am wrong please correct me.
as usual, thanks for your time.

Hi Serge:
I'm wondering why you want the 24valve vs the standard "L" V6. Having owned both, I personally think the "std" V6 has a bit of an edge. It has better low end torque and seems to have more usable power where its needed most. Just my opinion.

Serge,
with all the money and time you are spending on and older 164, why don't you just buy a 24V. Seems like a total waste of time to do all this. maybe the looks like a 24V but to do it all like that what a major job and I mean major. You would have to get a new computer and all, thats $$$$$. Just buy a 24V and then you would not have to ask so many ?'s and waste your time.

Hi guys,

I dont know if id bother doing it myself as 24valves are very cheap in uk now.
But one advantage would be the 24v in a 12v frame, (go for qv if possible) would off course be faster than standard as the 12v is 200kgs lighter.
At least one good reason !

i am picking up a complete 24v car with 80k miles (but shitty bodywork) so everything i need will be there. my 12v is pushing 125k and is getting tired. it will be easier to get more power out of the newer engine plus i will not have to worry about valve adjustments. so unless the motor/tranny is not a direct bolt on i think i am doing ok.

sorry for the interrupted train of thought (all that medication ya know). the better low end of the 12v motor is surely caused by the narrow intake tracks and ecu mapping. i am planning on buliding the 24v up a little and higher compression (just .5 a point by milling the deck .02 of an inch) will improve the off-line performance while ported heads will aid the top end (there is no money involved here as all the mods will be done by myself- and just to prevent spiteful comments i have done it before and i know how to port and use a flowbench). if i ever get my hands on qv intake runners and some nice headers i should be looking at about 250 reliable ponies. surely if i could afford a big bore kit extra 15 would be attainable. you are completely right stating that there is no need for all that but like i said, my motor is using oil and developing new noises by the hour and my injury is keeping me off motorcycles so i am just bored. this is not my first or only alfa but first 164 so there is no question you guys know more about it than i do so please do share any info you think is relevant.
regards to all.

Hey Serge just to let you know it ain't an alfa if it doesn't leak oil. All my mechanics say so and all alfas I've seen do. I am wondering is that engine your getting leaking too, if not, it will. I personaly hate it but it's an alfa. Later

Utter baldurdash, cars leak until you fix the the leak. My 164 does not leak, never has, and if it does i would have it fixed.

All cars leak if they dont get fixed.

Have you looked in a car park lately? or are alfas responsible for all those stains?

also, the ls and the q have differnt cams right?

Thats right I saw that when You left the parking lot that day in scottsdale. I was like oh sh** I wonder if he saw that. Mine does it once in awhile but very little when it does.
And Jerry I didn't say every single one does but from what my mechanic says they mostly all do. Your a lucky one I guess. Mine leaks I think at the cam bushings but not totally sure. I hate it and some day It will be fixed, I hate buying a quart of mobil every other week or so.

serge, if your 12v has got 125k on it then its only starting to open its lungs if it has been looked after well, my 12v had 134k miles on it when i sold it and it was very responsive with chip off course. Both my 24v and 12v never leave oil below them, rather they use oil , apparently 1 quart every 800 miles is ok although mine never used that amount.
With regard to torque, i did notice a subtle difference in that the 12v is right there when floored at low revs but has a constant increase of power up to red line. The 24vQV with chip and induct mod has also instant response at low revs but has that very apparent extra boost as you hit the higher revs which feels much more racy and as i have mentioned before, the 24qv is the only car that i have driven so far that as the revs increase, it screams with pleasure - not pain.

al- what kind of induction mod do you have. also, didn't you have a 12vQ chip for sale?

well, i already know i cannot use the newer tranny in an older car so unless the old one bolts up i am sol. also, i do not know if the newer ecu will plug in the older harness. if anyone has answers please post.
i really do not want to get rid of my super clean L and start fixing up a shitty Ls.

SErge,

I sold my 12 valve lusso with chip in it.
I have the original 24qv chip if anyone needs it !
The induction mod on 24QV was carried out by autodelta and gives 5bhp increase ,improvement mostly available at low revs and also compliments the autodelta chip nicely.

well, after talking to an expert i am abandoning the project. just for your information, it is possible but requires the transfer of the entire wiring harness to support the newer ecu. this suck cause i was looking forward to it. maybe i will have to fix the other car up and sell my clean 91.
