A while back, someone explained how to remove the instrument cluster from the dash. I can't find it in back posts, so could someone explain this again? I've got a bad connection in there and the speedometer is cutting out periodically. I need to clean the terminals and check to see if everything's still tight and solid there.

Hi Greg- Along the bottom of the cluster, there is a plastic strip. At each end of this strip, there are two small panels which pry off to reveal screws. Remove these screws, and lift up on the cluster to free it from the tabs at the top, which clip into slots at the base of the windshield. The wiring harnesses will still be plugged in to the back, but you can carefully free them from their retainer clips and get a little more room to access the bulbs, etc.

You're problem is probably the sensor that is located on the transmission. i had the same problem. but if you want to take the dash out, there are 2 little covers left and right, right under the instrument panel. the left one has the test button and stuff. just carefully stick a screwdriver in and pop them off.

I don't think it's the tranny sensor, just because the speedometer will pop back on if I give the dash a good, firm rap with my hand. That's what led me to believe it might be some connection back in there.

Thanks for the info though. If playing around with the console doesn't work, I'll check the sensor.

I had an Audi 200 once with a similar problem, banging the dash was also a temporary fix.

Turned out to be a dry solder joint on a capacitor, at the back of the speedo clock.

Didn't used to mind the problem, as the rev counter read exactly half the speed (3,000 rpm = 60 mph) and also the mileometer froze.

But the increase of speed cameras in England finally persuaded me to get the screwdrivers out.

That sounds logical to me. There's a couple burned out lamps back there, so I was gonna have to remove it anyway.
