"Autotrans needed for '91L in Virginia"

It's for my daily driver :< Bad slip on the 4-3 downshift and very slow engaging drive from reverse. Don't really want to put in a new tranny as I'm saving that money to get the valves done on a '94LS that I got recently with a broken T-belt. Thanks for any help!

Jim I have a similiar problem with new used 164Bw/AT I just picked up. Slow to go into drive and sometimes slow to go from 4-3.

According to Saab shop manual on tranny the problem of "delayed engagement from N to D or 4-3" is weak spring in Accumulator A in valve body. I got Saab shop manual from Eriksson Industries in CT.

I may try to get some parts from http://www.erikssonindustries.com/ and pull valve body on mine and change spring(s). I have gotten ZF A/T parts from them before and they were very helpful on the phone.

They have a complete parts breakdown of tranny on web site with part index numbers. Accumulator A piston spring is 26.390 on page 3 of parts diagram top of diagram. accumulator body is 26.320.

Looks like you have to pull valve body off invert it on work bench and remove access cover over accumulator pistons.

I had this problem with my automatic and replacing the spring fixed the problem. Erickson was very helpful. The spring cost about $5.00. The repair is pretty straight forward. I was advised by an Erickson technician to put the car in first gear before performing the job. If I remember correctly, he said that it would make it easier to put the valve body back in place in reference to the gear selector position.

Jim followed my lead and is back on the road shifting like designed. I am ordering spring(s) from them to do mine too.

Saab shop manual a big help as is Eriksson's.

Yep, the lighter of the 2 springs was actually broken. Upon replacing both springs,(less than $15) downshifting slip and the lag from reverse to drive were 'cured'. The only issue I had was with the gears that transfer the shifter motion to the fork attached to the valve body assy. Once you lift away the VB there is nothing to keep the upper gear from lifting off the lower gear. If they move independently you may not be able to engage all gears via the shifter. It's pretty straightforward to correct though. All in all the car is back to the way she used to be and I couldn't be happier. Now for a new coat of paint and an a/c compressor!

Thanks Steve!
