"Power folding side mirrors- like on '94-'95 USA models"

Question of curiousity-- where else have these power folding mirrors been used or offered in the US? Are these prevalent in the higher end cars that come to the US nowadays?

I thought I saw a Mercedes with its mirrors folded in the other day at the grocery store...

Most U.S. delivery cars don't have them simply out of the uselessness of cost vs. the demand of the customers (none).

Our cars had them simply because not enough U.S. cars were sold to justify the cost of removing them for our market.

There are a few cars that do offer it. I know that the late nineties 'S' class mercedes had automatic folding mirrors.

In Europe many more cars have these as options. Even a VW Jetta offers folding mirrors as optional in some countries.

These folding mirrors are really commonplace now. I didn't realise that in the US this was not something that interests buyers. European cities, no matter how big, will generally have some really narrow streets along with cramped parking spaces. I guess US streets are too wide and parking spaces are not as tight as ours to warrant folding mirrors. Interesting differences I guess. Makes the 164 even more 'luxurious' in the US!

That might not be all true as not all newer model had folding mirrors in europe. I've seen face-lifted 93-up model without such feature, probably optional on twin spark or diesel models.

By the way, Lexus LS 430 have folding mirrors. It can be controlled manual or automatic. That is when you turn the ignition off, mirror folds. Land Rover Range Rover has it also as well as Isuze Troper but those trucks have them for the off roading (tree branch clearance etc) not for parking.

Here in US, the land of "everything plenty", this is absolutly useless feature where all parking space is designed with big trucks in mind. (full size trucks outsells cars here in US)

I for one love the folding mirrors. They let me get very close to the side of the garage I park on the right side whereby the drywall is right next to the unused passenger door! Having the mirrors fold in upon ignition off would be much much less useful as I would have to park another 3-4 inches to the left to clear the door opening.

Also, when folded in, (and I have kids) the mirrors are much more' out of the way'. My 2 car garage has the LS on one side and the GTV on the other, and the space in between is for the kids to ride their bikes, skatboards, etc -- lots of bangs and dings on the LS as a result.

I have a full dossier on repairing the folding feature in case anyone is interested.

I whatched a Mercedes E class park up and fold in his mirrors (looked to be on auto). It was done in a smooth motion and you could hardly hear a thing as it happened. All very Germanic!

The 164 is definately Italian in it's approach to folding the mirrors. If they work they will fold in quickly in a juddering motion and making a noise as if all the cogs were about to explode on the floor!

I'm not suprised people look when we fold in our mirrors, such a noise is hard to ignore!

Jason,

The mirrors get noisy before they stop working. Once repaired they are fairly quiet (though definitely NOT silent).

If they sound like they are grinding then be prepared to open them up!!

Don't use the screwdriver method! Use the "pop the mirror off method". Look up the different methods via a search... I know they are out there in great detail...

Regardless of which method you use, be very careful to not break the glass!!! ONce you get the mechanism out, its pretty straightforward

Thanks guys. I found the article on removing and repairing along with the following tip from Cloverleaf4:

1. Position the mirror glass to give the maximum space in the UPPER corner NEAREST the car.

2. With a wide blade screwdriver GENTLY pry the glass away 1/4 inch from the mirror body at a point about an inch along the top edge of the glass from the top corner revealed in item 1.

3. Look down behind the mirror glass at the most exposed point. You should be able to see two connections to the heater mat. Just OUTBOARD of these you will see two plastic "ears" with two pieces of piano wire poking out between them. These are in fact the ends of a piano wire clip that secures the mirror glass to the operating mechanism.

4. Press down on the upper piano wire end and release it from the plastic ear. Pull up on the lower piano wire using long nose pliers or an improvised tool.

5. Remove the wide blade screwdriver and wiggle the mirror glass around to fully release the clip. With the glass free, CAREFULLY disconnect the heater. The connections break easily.

6. You can now easily access the four suicide screws and follow the rest of Bob's procedure.

To refit the glass, reinstall the piano wire onto the plastic base on the back of the glass with a smear of grease on it and secure same behind its plastic ears. The mirror is then a press fit back onto the operating mechanism.

The above procedure was driven by necessity on my car as one mirror had Phillips screws which came out, while the other mirror had #10 Torx screws, which didn't.

Per your instructions and those of "cloverleaf4", I was able to access the innerds of the wobbly rhs mirror of my 94LS. The "cloverleaf4" instructions worked like a champ to get the mirror off (unclipping the retaining wires behind the mirror, all of ten minutes). I did this with the mirror assy still on the car.

After disassembly, I got down to your instructions for moving the lower collar around on the shaft, which I did) but could find no setscrew for that collar at all.

Any recollection as to where the setscrew really is, or is the 94 mirror a little different than the 95? I may end up just shimming the lower collar up with a cutaway washer.

thanks,
