"How many of us will still be here in five years time?"

   Hi everybody?
Well i hope all of us will be alive and well.
but how many of us will still own a 164 to talk
about it five years from now?
i am wondering how many 164s are there currently
among this group and how many cars are dropping
out of the list every year for various reasons.
i guess major loss is due to cost of maintaining
and increasing difficulty in finding parts.
perhaps some have accidents and get totalled, and
again some being sold to owners who have no intention
to keep them other than a short time.
The only other positive factor i can think of are the
ones bought by 164 lovers and restored to be kept.
But i fear this is a very small number compared to the
losses.

Even if my wife thinks I'm unrealistic about my car ownership, she doesn't drive so doesn't have a say (and yes she does like the Alfa, but thinks we need a diesel or a smaller petrol engine, something cheaper to fill up). So yes, I plan on keeping at least one 164. I wouldn't mind a Q4 to keep as a future classic. There's one in Germany in pristine condition going for a snip over 3000 Euros but I have to get rid of one of my cars before I do something like that. I would also need to buy myself a new car (Alfa 159 or Saab 9-3) and probably diesel to appease the wife and keep the miles off the Q4. I would also like a Maserati Quattroporte IV V8 Evoluzione (nice long name) which go for about 18k Euros but that's another story!!!

If the man upstairs is willing my 164s and I will be still here. My goal currently is to get Old Silver painted and ready for my ladies to enjoy. My neighbor gets on my case for driving it more than my own and adding up to many miles before my daughter old enough to drive it. Also, my bride likes to drives it when I do maintenance on her Jeep. Buying it was a good family decision

I have not seen any difficulty in obtaining parts, ,but nothing serious has gone wrong with my latest (or my daughter's) 164. I fully expect to have one around in 5 years. My other Alfas would be lonely without one in the garage (or at least the driveway). I might get rid of the Milano or GTV6 for a new Alfa (hope they do come back soon), but the 164 is the most comfortable highway car that I have ever owned. My daughter's has 200K miles and gets it serviced by DiFatta in Baltimore. Mine has 150K miles in Connecticut.

I will own my 164Q for a LONG TIME! That is why I have been fanatical about returning it to new or better than new condition. Not for bragging, but for longevity. I have been assembling spare parts and I do all of my own work, whatever the job.

You will see me here in 10+ years. Like it or not.

Well, I have owned almost 50 cars in 15 years, and the 164 tops all of them. I suppose untill they make a better and more stylish car, that is the golden mean of automotive engineering, we'll be zooming about in our Big Red!

I have 3 164's, and I love them all. I am planning to have all 3 five years from now. I cannot find a more comfortable car that handles as well as the 164. We have 2 Infiniti's, but I will drive the 164's for more fun. I may get rid of the Milano for a new Alfa a in the future.

The 164 is likely to become problematic in North America because so few of them were sold. In my City of approximately 1 m people the local dealer sold 12 in the five years the car was imported.

Then again, I was at my local body shop today and there are three 164's there including mine. At my service shop last week there were not only two 164 (mine and one other) they were absolutely identical, colour, trim transmission, model year and everything.

The windshield yobs broke the windshield that was supposed to be carefully removed and preserved, so that it could be re-installed after the rust repair had been completed. To add insult to injury they then to threw it out to hide their incompetence. The idea was to accept the risk of stress cracking when the old windshield was re-installed (only a complete buffoon would break it pulling it out) and drive the car with the crack until the new windshield could be sourced. Now we have no windshield at all until a new one can be found.

The 164 will die out when most of us cannot source routine replacement parts like these for the very few cars left on the road. The older Alfas have a well established after market network that sevriced these cars when Alfa abandoned the market. No such network was created for the radically different FIAT based 164.

I am expecting to be here. You never know, though. We have three L's and an S scattered among my wife and three of the kids. I hope they'll be good for another 10+ yrs. The windshields look like their availability is shaping up to be a problem. Struts are expensive, too. And any time one of these cars is really struck in traffic, it seems to fold up and try to absorb all the energy, thereby becoming raw material for paper clips for any owner who can't fix the car himself. Just my opinion and intent.... Michael

Well, I hope I can last another 5 years. I'm struggling with them now trying to get one back on the road. I finally got a 24X24 greenhouse erected to use as a garage to fix the red one. I sure hope the next 5 years will show some value added to these fine cars.

I will be here for another 10 years for sure. Even if the 164 is stuck in the garage not running, "knock on wood"!
I have no reason to give up my 164, unless I have the chance to buy another alfa there is no need to spend money on another vehicle and giving up my white beauty!
I rather drive this car over any car on the road! (In US).
I think enough 164's will be around in junk yeards for parts so I am not worried too much about parts being gone! I am sure they will be coming back into the scene later with companies like www.Malospa.it.
The wife can drive the reliable boring German car. Next car we buy is a A4 3.2 Quattro wagon after the boring Jetta VR6.
Maybe a Q is next though?? Or Q4? May bring one over for premotional purposes or something to that effect to get one here! Not sure if it will work but It may?
Anyways I will be here for me and for you, parts, advice and help for me as well?
jason

PS Windshields ARE NO PROBLEM!!!
I have a source for windshields and they are making them with no hesitation.
I have 8-10 in stock!!!
I have about 5 non-heated in stock. And they are orderable from europe. No sign that they will be not available anymore.
We have source to Pilkington Triplex glass and a China based company making them as well and they are very High quality!

Spirit is willing, but the reality could be forbidding. Repaint is now 5-year-old and rust has built up slowly around the usual spots, not quite visible yet but could get ugly over time. Parts including the fragile windshield shouldn't be too difficult in my fair towm of Toronto, home to at least 60% of the Alfas ever sold in Canada. Still, sighting of a fellow 164 on the streets is getiing rarer. Yesterday I was honked at by an 80's Maserati Biturbo though.

Those 164 owners in Japan www.alfa164.com seem much more confident in keeping their classics. Some nice pictures of their massive 164 rallies over the years there. Very encouraging.

I probably won't but I will still have an alfa(or alfa's-my beloved 83 GTV6 (orignal owner) and my pristine 74 spider). I like the 164 but I commute 8o miles each way per day and my 164S is my commuter. I now have over 203K on it. The leather seats are supple with no tears and it still goes like a bat out of hell (valve job etc done at 150K)! By next spring a friend of mine will get a 2006 Mustang Cobra and sell his 1999 Cobra which has maybe 5K mile on it. He is under priviliedged car owner with a Porsche GT3, 2 ZO6's and the Cobra. I will probably buy Cobra to replace the 164.

Me too. Originally this car depreciated so rapidly I couldn't sell it. Now it is so unobtainable I can't part with it. The new Alfa 159 has the GM derived V6 which is proving so disappointing. So, even if Alfa returns to our market the glorious V6 of old is still not available.

Now GM is history from FIAT/Alfa's point of view we have to await the next product cylce to see what Alfa engines can belike again.

still 164'ing, trying to keep the cars up and out of the hoods of other cars which seem bent on rear-ending us.

Still enjoying them. I plan on learning how to repair the ZF automatic, or maybe transplanting the pedal box and other essentials with the 5-speed from my son's defunct S into the auto L if the transplanted A/T fails any time soon.

also a Michael

Big Red is still around! Since that first post in 2003 it has had a rebuilt engine, tranny, suspension, interior more paint, tires x 4, brakes x 3, radiator, fan, hoses, twice tuneup, 3 headlights, one grille, 2 antennas, wheels, and two full exhausts.
She's very reliable for a $100,000 car
Overall though it has been a very very good car to us that has only had three or four mechanical failures during trips (water pump, fuel pump, engine, tranny)

In 3 more years? I may be driving something much older, instead.

Trinity (that's my S) is still very much alive & kicking. Bought her in 2000 with 112,000 miles, had her whole engine rebuilt at that time, now has 182,000 miles and going strong. Countlessly many $$$ spent since that time to keep her in tip-top shape. Didn't help that I'm the worst fixer-upper in the world and everything was done by mechanics - labor charges on this car is sky-high. I've done everything possible to the car in the last 70,000 miles except for a body-off paintjob.

I could probably have gotten a brand-new BMW M3 for what I've spent in all on Trinity, but it was worth it. Much of the $$$ was spent two summers ago. I was to embark on a two-year stay in Indiana and, as there are no Alfa mechanics for 1000 miles around Indiana, asked my mechanic to undergo a mechanical & cosmetic "renovation". 18 months and 11,000 miles later, Trinity has not needed to visit any shop at all save for oil changes (and a new battery), and from her looks and sounds, probably won't need to for many thousands more miles.

If it wasn't for passion for this machine, all this would have been ridiculous. It's already economically ridiculous.

I keep computerized home accounts and just printed off the breathtaking total I spent on cars since 1996 when I first began recording the accounts on computer. Bear in mind that the Alfa was 6 years old when I started keeping this data base. I did not spend much money on it from 1995 when the warranty ran out until the AC compressor went out in 1997 and the stepper motors went out in 1998.

The Alfa 164 is the second cheapest of my fleet.

I run a 1998 Mazda Protege about 12,000 km per year (8,000 miles +/-) which is a tad more than the Alfa over the same period.

The Mazda costs less than $750 a year to repair and service.

The Alfa Romeo costs $2,400 per year for repairs and service.

The major Alfa repair bills include the AC rebuild after the pulley disintegrated, the transmission repair after the input shaft bearing broke, the timing belt and a bunch of related work at around 135,000 km, stepper motors of course, windshield header rust repair and two sets of tires.

I've owned this Alfa from new so all regular service and all possible warranty work was done on time and properly. This is key to longevity in any car.

Of course, I ensured that the warranty work was done correctly on the Mazda. Except it had next to NO WARRANTY WORK in the three years it was covered. I mean the warranty costs to Mazda were zero. The only thing that went wrong was the radiator cap stuck closed and the resulting over pressure blew the gasket out of the winter electric block heater ( a dealer installed item, they go into a freeze plug hole) three times before they diagnosed the failed rad cap.

The Alfa Romeo cost ARDONA a fair bit in the four years of coverage including a free timing belt for me after the 24 valvers were blowing up with alarming regularity due to a period of defective install of timing belts on the 24 valve engines at the factory. To be on the safe side every 12 valve engine in Canada at least also got a free fresh timing belt before they discovered it was the factory install that was wrong, not the belts.

Well. Big Red screwed me for the last time. Two years ago I rebiult completely the auto tranny with new/rebiult parts from ericsson. On New Year's on the the way home from fire works and a party the f*$*ing oil pump failed again. No forward gears, just reverse. I drove home in reverse for 10 blocks at full speed; and that was the last time this 164 will have given me a thrill.
I've had it. I just spent so much money rebiulding the suspension, only to have the steering seals fail and now this.
I'm parting the car since it was worth less than its tires before and now it is worth nothing. I will try to recoup some of the part expence by parting it on eBay. If anyone needs parts like LS interior new fron shocks, exhaust, whatever, let me know.

So no Eurolights upgrade, huh?
Ouch, sorry to hear. I guess you won't be here in 5 years!
I pray I don't have the same fate! I just rebuilt mine from the ground up.
Luckily I have an engine ready to put in in-case it blows up on me.
Anyways, sorry this happened it sucks that another 164 is off the road. Strange how two oil pumps went bad, they seem like a pretty strong part as I have never seen many go?

Good luck Taso. Nice having you around here all these years.

Jason; 4HP18 oil pumps according to Ericsson; are a f&$&\^ed part from ZF that wears at the shaft. I bought their "rebuilt" part last time. I'm just not willing to put up with defective parts anymore.
I still have another 5 Alfas to play with just no more 164s for me.
Oh well.. I still like you guys.

I'm going to ride my Bicycle to work. It's VERY reliable! (1967 PX10)

Yes sir!. I got it at a yard sale for $10. It looks like it saw 10 miles in 30 years. Campy gears, French wheels. Normal lugs.
Very sweet bike. My next door neighbor has a $6500 carbon bike that is a retarded investment in my point of view since he weighs over 250 pounds. (same sence as in the likes of re-rebuilding an HP18 for oil pump failure).

My first bike was a '69 MERCIER tour de France. Black with the Block lettering with fancy lugs. I have found later MERCIERs in the US but not the pre-70's ones; anyone got one???? I'll trade you a 164 with a bad stator for it
Gitane's are sweet bikes. They were very very expensive in Greece new.

Yeah, I got that after he talked about erikson. I must have missed that.
That auto tranny is no good IMO. I have seen so many fail. I have a customer converting to a 5 speed here as his auto is toast even after erikson rebuilt it. They told him it needs to be replaced. So he has had it and replacing with 5 speed is easy.

Jason says, "replacing (an A/T with a) 5-speed is easy." I'd like to know what to do with the A/T oil temp sensor idiot light to make it more useful. Use it as a radiator fan ON signal instead of mounting this on the dash elsewhere? (No, I've not yet done this, but I really was interested when Alfisto Steve -- mjkhpns -- mentioned doing it.)

Hey; I'm not going anywhere; just not driving a 164 daily. (First time in 6 years)
I'm on the lookout for a "better car". Don't know what that is yet.
Low mile 164? S? Q? BMW? Who knows.

No I figured, just though you may have said the hell with 164's, so thought you may not be in this forum any longer nor alfabb 164 section!!
Sounds good. though, hope you get another 164, just stay away from the auto... Q sounds like a good choice.

Well, Omer posted his question on "Oct-14-05, 02:33 AM (EST)" (according to my browser and location settings). This isn't quite 5 years later, but it's two months shy of half-way. I'm still here. And so are my 164s. We haven't lost any to accidents in, what is it, maybe almost 13 months? If this keeps up, I may still have some cars in 2010.

well i have had my baby since 2000, having earmarked this very car for myself when it arrived in the country under diplomatic immunity (no import taxes)in 1992 - she was destined to be mine. There is no way in hell i could ever get rid of this car, clocked up only 95000 miles, and about to have the engine redone (rings, valvegear etc.) There is nothing near as beautiful, and the entire range of Alfas has been available in SA since 1993, so its not as if i don't have a choice. The 166 is wonderful, but is likened to a fat lady taking on an athletic runner on a mountain pass....

Long live the timeless beauty of this 1987 release. Mine still has the original floor mats, which are perfect, my partner has just had to replace a set of floor mats in our 2006 Renault Megane Cabrio - there is no substitute for quality, and the way they used to do it.

Amen brother, they threw away the mold after they made the 164 but I would like to see a 156 sportwagon up close as I have a thing for wagons. I had 65, 72, 74 and 78 Ford Wagons before I went into Italian cars. Had one Fiat 131 wagon. Wanted an 81-82 Lancia Beta HPE
but never was able to get one.

Often thought I ought to make a 164 wagon out of one of my rescue projects.

Have a 91 164L 5 speed I bought in 95 which now has 200K miles. My daily ride is a BMW 540I (6speed) but the Alfa resides under a cover in the driveway and is driven at least weekly. Just replaced the serpentine idler and belt. She passes smog and has 17" Zender Siennas running top BFG rubber. Sweet car and unless my Sicilian wife torches her rival, in 5 years she (the car) will be here. Me too God willing. I really have had a great run with Italian cars starting with a Ferrari in the early 70's. Keeps you sharp if not young. Also the forums are more entertaining than the Teutonic ones that I also frequent.

It's now more than 4 years after the original post. Sadly my 91 164's auto tranny just failed last week. Cannot shift to 2nd, only 1st and reverse. Talked to Eriksson and they said this particular problem is rare, although the ZF 4HP18Q is known to have all sorts of trouble. In any case, I read in many posts here and the Afla BB that even rebuilds don't seem provide any long term (3-4year?) solution and it will be costly. So I made the tough decision of parting with the 164. Real shame because the interior and paint is in excellent condition and it only has 195K km or 120K miles. I do have a list of parts I collected over the years but I am in Toronto Canada and there aren't a lot of 164's here anymore. My basement is filled with stuff like windshield, Ansa exhaust, set of 16" rims etc. Is there anyone who is in the Toronto region and want to buy these?

Me, universe-willing. I absolutely just could not bring myself to sell either of my Alfas..... Its just not an option. The Harley would go, no questions asked, but not my 91 164 nor my 81 Alfa 6 Saloon. It just doesn't make sense to me, all the blood sweat and tears have put in, to go to someone else? Nope
I will be buying more Alfas though...

I lost my pasword and have a new email address, so I am now listed as new. In reality, I have posted on this board since before 1996. Probably early 90's. In fact, one of the first times I ever used the internet, I plugged "Alfa 164" into Yahoo. Got this site right off the bat. "Wow, this internet stuff is cool," I thought.

Any way, at the moment I am Alfaless, but have had:
1) A white 1991 164 base (I bought new in 91)
2) A 1991 black L
3) A champagne 94 LS
4) A black 95 LS (manual).

oh, and a 91 Alfa Spider..

STILL have a 1981 Fiat Spider...original owner.

Muster Muster July 4, 2010 did you drive your Alfa today. Extra bonus points if it was also a 164. I drove two of mine, how about you?

Had a very good 4th. drove the S up to a friend's house at one of the local Indian reservations, where the native Americans can set off really really big fireworks, all day and night. What a racket, these guys go on and on. Ate lots of hot dogs, potato salad, and several beers of course. Also got to watch a fledgling eagle hop around on the ground trying to fly back to the nest, while his mama watched from the tree tops. That was cool.

I'm still here after 7 years with my Q4 - and Alfa's 100th birthday - let's hope Alfa will be here for another 100 years!

412,000 km! That's *incredible* - over 250,000 miles. Congratulations. How's the AWD system holding up?
