The Alfa 164 is available in four different versions with four different engines-one of them a diesel-all featuring high technology and the highest specific power outputs to be found in a car of this size.
The 164 range offers the customers a choice of 1,962-2,959 cc, 117-192 bhp DIN, 200 to over 230km/h.
|Engine||Displacement (cc)||Power (bhp-DIN)|
|Alfa 164 3.0 V6||6V (60o)||2,959||192|
|Alfa 164 Turbo Petrol||4 cyl. in line||1,995||175|
|Alfa 164 Twin Spark||4 cyl. in line||1,962||148|
|Alfa 164 Turbo Diesel||4 cyl. in line||2,500||117|
One of the three petrol engines adopts six cylinders in a V layout, the other three have 4 cylinders in line: the Twin Spark and the 2 litre turbos (petrol and diesel). All four engines are transverse mounted.
Trims, equipment and options vary from version to version.
This is the range topper, designed with a particular eye on those foreign markets where displacements over 2 litres are not punitively taxed.
The 2,959 cc V6 engine is a further development of the power pack already adopted on the Alfa 75 3.0 V6 America and Milano versions.
Here, the power output has been raised from 188 to 192 bhp DIN at 5,600 rpm.
This new engine successfully brings together high specific power (roughly 65 bhp/Iitre) with exceptional flexibility. Its most characteristic features are:
The 164 3.0 V6 offers a high level of performance: it has a top speed of over 230 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 sec- onds.
Of the two litre petrol versions, this is the one offering the most power (175 bhp DIN at 5,700 rpm) and the most sparkling performance.
Its 1,995 cc, four cylinder in-line engine is a Lancia Thema i.e. turbo derivative revised by Alfa Romeo and Lancia engineers with a view to outright performance (hence the elimination of the balancer counter-shaft).
This engine also features:
The 164 TB is capable of a speed of over 220 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds.
The 1,962 cc 4 cylinder in-line petrol engine on this version of the 164 is a particularly advanced model already fitted on the recent 2.0 Twin Spark version of the AIfa 75.
The Twin Spark engine offers several features exclusive to Alfa Romeo:
This engine develops 148 bhp DIN at 5,800 rpm, an impressive achievement for a normally aspirated two litre power unit.
It has a top speed of over 210 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds.
The extremely compact 2,500 cc four cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler develops a stunning 117 bhp DIN at 4,200 rpm and features an equally impressive torque (26 mkg at 2,200 rpm) thanks to exclusive features like:
A series of other devices minimise exhaust fumes on cold starting and ensure an exceptionally quiet engine by class standards.
The Alfa 1 64 Turbodiesel is the fastest diesel saloon on the market, achieving a top speed of 200 km/h.
