The 164 LS and 164 Q replace all previous versions of the 164 bringing an innovative style and a series of new features regarding to the single components of the mechanics and above all the engines. The 164 LS and 164 Q are equipped by 3.000 cc 6 cylinder petrol engine. The specific electronic engine management systems permitting an optimization of the output without penalizing performance and all conform to the severest anti- pollution norms. The exhaust system controlling the toxic emissions (with a three-way catalyzer and lambda probe).
The outstanding six-cylinder 60o V 3000 cc engine, 4 valves per cylinder featured by the 164 is the most powerful unit of the 164 range; the new timing system, with two overhead camshafts on each cylinder head, jointly with the static ignition system with one coil for each spark plug and the Motronic M1.7 system controlling the engine, have further improved the overall performance of the vehicle, yelding a maximum power of 230 HP at 6300 r.p.m., and a maximum torque of 204 ft.lbs at 5000 r.p.m. (the 164 LS featuring 210 HP at 6300 r.p.m. and a max. torque of 196 ft.lbs at 5000 r.p.m.).
The four valves for each cylinder ensure a uniform distribution of the air-fuel mixture within the cylinders, improving refilling and optimizing the heat output from combustion leading to an increase in the power of the engine.
Timing is controlled by a toothed belt and a Poly-V belt operates the auxiliary organs.
